Irish Aeropress Championships 2014
Now, we all think that we can make the perfect cup of coffee. After all, you love what you can brew! But it can difficult sometimes to prove to other people that your way is the best way – but no longer. Now barista professionals as well as the casual enjoyer of a cup of coffee had the chance to demonstrate to the crowds, and more importantly, to their friends, that the mug that they can provide is categorically the best ever: at the Irish Aeropress Championships.
This celebration is not as light hearted as you may think, however: the winners not only get the joy of triumphing over their competitors, but also win the opportunity to take part in the World Barista Championships that will be held in Italy later on in the year. Rather unusually, the Irish Aeropress Championships are open to baristas that work with coffee for a living, as well as a normal home consumer, to take part, which left the competition wide open.
This year, twenty four different confident coffee consumers stepped up to the kettle to take on the challenge. The three judges gave them eight short minutes to prepare what they considered to be the perfect cup of coffee, and then they tasted each of them. But instead of elaborate scoring, and confusing algorithms to choose a winner, the Irish Aeropress Championships have a much simpler way of deciding: on the count of three, the judges point to the person that they think should be the winner.
This year’s winner was Monika Winiarek, of Coffee Angel, and she is very excited to continue her competitive streak in Italy at the World Barista Championships. But she would not reveal that dark secrets that make her cup of coffee utterly perfect.
