How Much for a Perfect Cup of Tea?
You may have seen in the news recently that a company has released the details of what it calls The Craft Brewer. Many coffee enthusiasts perked up their heads immediately: a new machine that can promise the most amazing and delicious mug of coffee? But they were immediately disappointed, because this machine that costs £7,700 has not been created to satisfy our love of caffeine. No: it has been created to make the perfect cup of tea.
It is almost ridiculous, actually, when you read through the spiel that the company has offered its tea-drinking masses. The Craft Brewer promises to “change the air pressure, so the soluble flavour elements and natural sugars are extracted more completely and with greater purity”. It uses RAIN technology (that’s reverse atmospheric infusion, to you and me) to force air through the tea bag in a rather strange way, all in aid of creating the perfect cup of tea. And this complicated and mechanical process will only take you a minute.
But as all coffee drinkers will know, what’s the fun in that? Half of the joy of making a brilliant cup of coffee is the loving time that it takes to formulate it. Aeropress coffee machines don’t take forever, but they do allow you to savour the waiting period, making that first sip of coffee incredible. You don’t want to have the perfect cup in a minute: you want to wait patiently for the perfect cup, to enjoy the craft that created it.
So where can you buy this machine that makes the perfect cup of tea? In a wonderful twist of irony, you can’t. But you can try them out – in some of New York’s favourite coffee houses.
